Rimouski, July 26, 2023 – An extra hole was needed to settle the overall 13-17 girls' podium this Wednesday, the first day of activities at the 57th Québec Games Finals! In the end, Kate Guo and Julia Riel from Richelieu-Yamaska won the gold medal in the “two balls, best ball” format event presented at Club de golf Bic in Rimouski.

 

Four teams were tied for the lead with 49 points, based on the Stableford method. Despite fierce competition, Guo and Riel didn't give up and came out on top.

 

Alycia St-Gelais and Miranda Thompson (Capitale-Nationale), Mylee Murillo Beaudoin and Vicky Li (Laurentides) as well as Louanne Aubin and Mercedes St-Onge (Côte-Nord) were awarded silver medals (Laurentides) after the playoff. The latest were gold medallists at the 55th Québec Games Final last summer.

 

In the boys' bantam category (13-14 years old), Lac Saint-Louis golfers Oscar Ricketts (Québec team) and Ollie Robinson finished first with a total of 59 points. This result enabled them to beat Louis Chénard and Louis-Olivier St-Pierre, from the Lower St. Lawrence region, by two points.

 

"It was great to get some points for Lac-Saint-Louis! I played well as a team with my friend Ollie. We recorded five birdies and an eagle, with only three bogeys," recalled Oscar Ricketts, who won a silver medal last year alongside Alessandro Fragnito.

 

"I'm pleased that we won and that we collected points for our region," added Ollie Robinson with pride.

Bronze went to Jonathan Matteau and William Savard-Forget, from La Capitale-Nationale, who cumulated 56 points at Club de golf Bic.

 

Moreover, they were the only athletes to be awarded a bronze medal on Wednesday. This is due to the fact that, just like in the girls' event, a tie led to several silver-medal-winning teams on the juvenile (15-16 years) boys' side.

 

Zachary Benfeito and Arnaud Langevin, from Lanaudière, won the gold medal with a total of 58 points in the juvenile division.

 

"It's a great honour to represent my region in golf! I'm very proud to have won," said Benfeito after the competition.

 

"It feels good to be playing well! What's more, it's fun to represent my region at the Québec Games! I'm really proud. I think I could have done better, but I'm happy with my performance," said Langevin.

 

Two duos took second place on the podium with a score of 57: Raphaël Janvier and Félix Cloutier, from the Eastern Townships, and Justin Carignan and Frédérick Poirier, representing the Mauricie region.

 

The 57th Québec Games Finals will resume on Thursday with the two-player Vegas event, before the competition concludes with the presentation of the individual stroke play on Friday.
