Bromont, August 27, 2023 – Anthony Jomphe (Québec team/Chicoutimi) took part in his last junior tournament this weekend at the Graham Cooke Junior Invitational at Golf Château-Bromont. The Saguenay native didn't miss his chance to set his mark, taking top honours with an excellent cumulative score of 136 (-8).

 

Jomphe was tied with his good friend and teammate Antoine Jasmin (Québec team/Le Blainvillier) at the end of the first round on Saturday. The friendly rivalry continued on Sunday, the second day of the event, when Jomphe came out on top, two strokes ahead of Jasmin, and one shot ahead of Henry Dao (Vallée du Richelieu).

 

"We had two great days of competition, I love the course at Golf Château-Bromont, and it's a great way to end my junior career. I hit the ball very well, I managed to get close to the flags, and I think that made my weekend a success," commented Jomphe.

 

"It is motivating to rub shoulders with Antoine, we both played well. We could push each other to give everything we had, it's nice when that happens."

 

Jomphe admits that the support and backing of the Québec team also played an important role in his weekend victory.

"We've had great coaching since last winter, our preparation started early, and we were ready straight from the first tournaments of the year. This support is extremely beneficial and certainly helps us all to be better," added Jomphe.

 

 

Sofia De Zordo (Balmoral) dreamed of her first victory on the Golf Québec tour for a long time. She can now say mission accomplished, having won the junior girls' event in Bromont on Sunday.

 

After the first round of the event, De Zordo was one shot behind competitors Geneviève Jobin-Colgan (Québec team/Lorette) and Rosalie Langlois (Vallée du Richelieu). She never gave up, and her second day brought her a well-deserved victory.

 

"It's fantastic! I put so much effort into golf and it's fun to win an event like the Graham Cooke Junior Invitational. I won at the Québec Games last summer, but this time I think it's even bigger and more important," said the winner.

 

De Zordo knew that victory could be within her grasp at the beginning of the second round, but she still wanted to concentrate on what she could control, without worrying too much about her opponents' performances. It was a strategy that paid off for Zordo, who showed consistency throughout the day.

 

"I had a chat with my coach before the round and he suggested I play my game without worrying about the rest. My putting was good, and I was able to make several birdies. When I play well, I'm able to be very consistent and that was the case today (Sunday)."

 

 

So far this season, Kate Guo (St-Hyacinthe) seems to be in a class of her own in the Bantam category. In fact, she kept up the momentum at the Graham Cooke Junior Invitational, winning with a first round 72 on Saturday.

 

"On Saturday, I played really well, but I think I may have been overconfident for the second round and wasn't able to repeat the performance of the day before. I was still able to finish strongly and win," explained Guo.

 

A three-time winner at the Québec Games earlier this summer in Rimouski and bantam champion at the Provincial Bantam, Pee-Wee, and Mosquito Championships in early August, Guo was delighted to enjoy so much success in recent months. She will be looking to continue in this vein in the few tournaments left before the end of the season.

 

"My next competition will be my club's championship in Saint-Hyacinthe. My opponents will be older than me, but I'll do my best and will try to win there too," added Guo with a laugh.

 

In the boys' Bantam division, Jimmy Galbraith (Maître de Mont-Tremblant) was crowned. Tied at 70 with Oscar Ricketts (Québec team/Beaconsfield) after the first round, Galbraith delivered an all-out battle to his nearest rival on the second day of activity.

 

Galbraith finally finished the second round at 78, one shot ahead of Ricketts. The winner admits that the quality of his opponent's game allowed him to surpass himself and win.

 

"I was a bit nervous at the beginning of the day, but I managed to calm down to play -3 in the last 10 holes. I pushed hard to get back on Oscar and it worked. I often play against him, he's an excellent golfer, it's never easy to win when he's around," confided Galbraith.

 

This was the last tournament for Jimmy Galbraith in 2023, who could not have hoped for a better end to his season.

 

"I feel really good, I'm happy to win in a two-day tournament, it's very special. My season is now over, and I think this is the best way to end it all," concluded the winner.

 

The season isn't over yet for the Golf Québec staff, who will be at Club de golf St-Prime for the Inter-Regional Junior Championship on September 10.
